This list is intended for announcements about an informal biological sciences "data lunch", and other general queries, discussion, and announcements of events of interest. Currently (winter 2024), meetings will be on Fridays 12:30-1:20 PM in LSB 213A: a Zoom link is also available, but you should let us know if you plan to attend remotely (at least an hour in advance, please) The general protocol for data lunch is that someone brings a data set, gives a short presentation (10-15 minutes) outlining the basic biology/natural history of their system, giving a general description of their questions (why/what they want out of the data), and perhaps presenting a few preliminary and/or graphical results on the data (graphical presentations of the data are strongly encouraged); they may also want to describe the statistical techniques they've used or are thinking of using, or particular problems they're having with the analysis. The floor is then open for general question & answer/discussion. Resources Ian Dworkin has posted some collected resources from past data lunches. The R-users-l mailing list is a friendly local forum for asking R questions. Information for presenters Please e-mail a one- or two-sentence blurb about your topic in advance to the organizer, for inclusion in the weekly reminder. We like pictures of your organism, but we really like pictures of your data. If possible it's good to be prepared so that we can also see your raw data and code (and suggest things to try) during the discussion. When we meet physically, most people bring their own laptops to present. There is a projector with an HDMI connector in the room. Once confirmation is received, your request will be held for approval by the list moderator. You will be notified of the moderator's decision by email.
