[cdn-nucl-l] McMaster Reactor

In an article by Ray Silver, in today's Nucleonics Week (McGraw-Hill), the
much improved prospects and economics of the McMaster (Hamilton, Ont) 5 MW
th research and isotope-production reactor are described. The reactor is
again operating profitably, having been running a $500,000 annual deficit
just four years ago. At that time, the university governors had decided to
decommission the 1959-built pool reactor (originally 2 MWth). But new
service contracts for industrial use were made, and the reactor budget was
balanced.

The reactor management was reorganized, staff were hired, operations were
improved to meet AECB safety demands, and various systems were upgraded.
New funding is paying for improved facilities.

The use of I-125 for medical diagnostics was developed at Mac, and has since
been licensed in Sweden. What is I-125 used for?
