[cdn-nucl-l] Russia's Adamov says LWR MOX use delays FBRs

NUCLEAR NEWS FLASHES - Friday, September 10, 1999

INTERNATIONAL NEWS:
--RUSSIAN MINISTER OF ATOMIC ENERGY YEVGENY ADAMOV YESTERDAY TOLD the
Uranium Institute's annual meeting in London, "If the huge potential of
nuclear energy is to be realized in the 21st century, the nations concerned
should join forces to develop, build and demonstrate a fast reactor and a
fuel cycle tailored to the principles of natural safety." He dismissed the
use of mixed-oxide fuel in LWRs, saying that such a fuel cycle raises the
cost of generating electricity, adds to the risk of nuclear weapons
proliferation and reduces "the deployment chances of fast reactors by more
than half."

Comment: presumably Adamov isn't aware of the CANDU DUPIC fuel cycle...
