[cdn-nucl-l] Port Hope; Leave the low level waste where it is.

Interesting letter!

How much money (taxpayers dollars) will it cost to move the soil?

Just think of what better use could be made of that money.

Leave the low level waste where it is

To the editor:

Re: 'Promote Port Hope as radiation health spa', letter to the editor, July 26, 2011.

Writer Bill Tuer suggests the PHAI (Port Hope Area Initiative) make better use of the media to report there are no concerns with radiation and that we promote the town as a radiation health spa given his claim that increased doses of radiation are healthy. He forgets to mention that most experts don't support his claim.

However, if what he says is true, I'd be upset that our government is wasting a few billion taxpayers' dollars on the PHAI for no reason. I feel the health and financial risks to us make it safer to just leave the LLRW (low level radioactive waste) where it is. Experts on both sides of the argument about the health effects of radiation have said the same thing for different reasons. I don't know if Bill Tuer would agree with me on this or about cancelling the PHAI altogether, but it would be interesting if he did given we've two different points of view on the health risks to relocating the LLRW within the town.
