UNRESTRICTED | ILLIMITÉ
As announced on the AECL web site http://www.aecl.ca/, NRU is back in operation at full power, for producing medical radioisotopes and neutrons for the National Research Council neutron scattering facility. NRU was tested at low power over the past weekend.
An enormous amount of effort was expended by the dedicated restart team, to determine the cause of the leak (external corrosion on the calandria vessel), develop techniques to repair it (requiring tool development) with weld overlay (thanks to the additional welding expertise of Liburdi Engineering of Dundas, Ontario), make modifications to some systems to reduce the corrosion rate in the “J-rod” annulus, reassemble the core internals (instrumentation, control, fuel), and recommission many systems (many of which were also refurbished/repaired/upgraded).
My hat’s off to the restart team - a job well done!
cheers
Morgan
