[cdn-nucl-l] Upcoming seminar by Patrick Moore - March 29 at McMaster

Folks,

Please see attached flyer for an upcoming talk by Dr. Patrick Moore, Co-founder of Greenpeace on Wednesday, March 29, 2006 from 2:00 to 3:30 at McMaster University BSB B135. The title of his talk, “Searching for a Sustainable Energy Future”, addresses the scientific evidence showing nuclear power to be an environmentally sound and safe choice.  This talk would be of interest to students, faculty, professionals and others interested in the environment and sustainable energy policy.  The technical level is suitable for the non-professional as well.  This is a rare opportunity to meet Dr. Moore, a leader in the international environmental field for over 30 years.

At the CNA Winter Seminar in February, Patrick Moore, co-founder of Greenpeace, was the luncheon speaker.  He gave a stunning talk.  The essence of Patrick's talk was that after years of protesting on the basis of what people should not do (pollute, test nuclear bombs, kill whales....), he decided that it was time to promote what people should be doing.  He has latched onto nuclear energy as the way forward for base load because of the emissions of coal, oil and gas, the pending shortages of oil and gas, and the cost and intermittency of solar and wind.  He also questioned the link of emissions to global warming by placing current temperature data into the context of historic and pre-historic trends.  He presented some very clear arguments in a very clear manner.  He accepted that energy is synonymous with quality of life and looked for the best ways forward.  He looked at household energy usage and points to heat pumps as good bang per buck.  And so on.  Dynamite stuff.

Directions to the venue can be found at http://nuceng.mcmaster.ca/faq/directions.htm.  The very last link on the page gives a nice pdf map of the campus.  BSB (Burke Science Bldg) is building 11.  Parts of the building are under construction so it is best to enter by the main entrance to the building rather than any of the side entrances.

Please post the attached notice at your workplace and forward to anyone who you feel might be interested.

See you there,
Bill
