[cdn-nucl-l] Ontario nuclear generation in 2005

The preliminary results are in, for Ontario's nuclear generation in 2005.  The following numbers are for gross generation in MWhe.  Capacity factors are based on the original full power reactor rating (i.e. Bruce A reactors are rated at 904 MWe gross, each, and Bruce B at 915 MWe gross, each).

The results are based on final generation numbers from Nucleonics Week, for January 1 to Oct 31 2005, plus preliminary results from Ontario's Independent Electricity System Operator for Nov 1 to Dec 31, 2005.

 

 

Bruce B + Pickering B + Darlington = 68,060,000 MWhe gross in 2005, the highest output from these 12 reactors since 1995, and the third highest of the 12 years that all these reactors have been in operation.

 

Total Ontario production = 83,028,000 MWhe gross (capacity factor of 78.6%) from 16 reactors (Pickering 1 was only reconnected to the grid in late Sept, so one could say 15.3 reactors were running).  The previous highest year was 1996, when 84,698,554 MWhe gross were generated by 19 reactors (capacity factor of 68.70%).  In 2004, total Ont production was 81,131,506 MWhe gross (capacity factor = 77.66%) from 15 reactors.

 

The difference in production between 2004 and 2005 was 1,896,000 MWhe gross.  This is partly due to the addition of Pickering 1, which has generated about 690,000 MWhe gross since being reconnected to the grid on Sept 26 2005.  It has been running at full power for the past few weeks, and has a capacity factor of 55% since reconnection (this period includes initial low power testing, the test shutdown from 60% full power, and the ramp up to full power following commencement of commercial operation on Nov 3 2005).

 

Numbers for Nov and Dec 2005 are unknown for Point Lepreau and Gentilly-2, along with the other 11 in operation CANDUs around the world.
