Re: [cdn-nucl-l] No Brainer?

Randal:

Interesting article. Can someone tell me if the word "hydro" is used as a synonym for "electricity" either in Canada or just in Ontario?

It appeared so from several lines in the article.

"The provincial business group said that an adequate hydro supply should be in place before coal is phased out."

"Council is confident that new technology can convert the Nanticoke coal fired generating station into a cleaner source of hydro."

"If the Ontario government will not move from its 2009 goal to shut the plant, county officials want to be informed about alternatives for the hydro transmission lines out of the plant and about the province’s future power generation plans."

I realize that the provincial power company is Ontario Hydro, but the way that the word is used above is slightly confusing to an American.

Thanks,

Isn't this a no-brainer?  If a coal fired plant is shut down, it should
be replaced by a fission reactor to take advantage of the grid being in
place at that location?  Also, this will preserve some degree of
employment in the affected area.

My approach - build the fission reactor at the coal plant site,
gradually turn up the fission system as you gradually turn off the coal
system, then remove the coal burning equipment.  Nobody in the coal
plant loses a job if this is done right.
