RE: [cdn-nucl-l] Sleepless in Toronto
Regarding building new NPPs, its interesting to note that while NB Premier
Bernard Lord was highly critical of the Federal Gov't refusing to help with
Lepreau refurbishment ("they provide loans to China, but not to New
Brunswick...."), he failed to acknowledge that the loan was for the
construction of new CANDU plants.
It seems to me that any Canadian Provincial Gov't would have a much better
case for Federal loans, were they to propose building new CANDUs as well.
Beats me, why the Ontario Gov't - or Alberta, or Saskatchewan (in both cases
for electricity PLUS oil sands SAGD projects) - haven't yet opted for that
route.

The Honourable Dwight Duncan, Minister of Energy, gave a speech to The
Canadian Club of Toronto on 2005 May 2. You can see the full text of
this speech at:

I found the following quotes interesting:
"But let me say on a personal level that making the decision to
proceed with Pickering A Unit 1 was the most difficult decision I’ve
had to make so far as Energy Minister. To be very honest with you, the
decision kept me up at night, because it transferred an enormous level
of risk onto the backs of Ontario’s ratepayers and taxpayers."
Everyone should send an email to Minister Duncan to congratulate him
for making the right decision. Pickering A Unit 1 is operating now
and that imagined risk has vanished.
"The toughest issue that must be grappled with is the future of
nuclear energy. ... Ontarians seem to be equally divided on the issue."
In other words, given that 50% plus one wins, we only need one more
person to come out in favour of nuclear power and we can start
building new plants. So this seems to the the time to lobby, write,
talk, and promote. Some advertising from OPG would help!
You can send Minister Duncan an email from this web page:
http://www.energy.gov.on.ca/index.cfm?fuseaction=about.contact
Let him know that you want more nuclear power.
