For those in the Deep River area at the start of April, and who don't mind the thought of Sir John Cockroft and Minister C.D.Howe dancing and singing together, the Deep River Players present "West Wylie Story" on April 1,2,7,8, and 9 -- a whimsical musical comedy based (loosely!) upon the local culture and events that surrounded the establishment of Chalk River Laboratories and its townsite, known subsequently as Deep River, ON.
The story is a take-off on "West Side Story", with the clash of cultures provided by the mixing of scientists and locals (affectionately known as "Bushies"). The fun starts when a young scientist working on the start-up of ZEEP falls in love with a local girl, whose family's land has been expropriated to build the nuclear site...
Visit the Players' website, www.DeepRiverPlayers.ca, for more details. Opening Night (April 1st) includes a gala reception after the show, sponsored by AECL in honour of the 60th anniversary of ZEEP.
