Dear Mr. Leavitt:
The Honourable Stéphane Dion, Minister of the Environment, has
forwarded to the Honourable R. John Efford, Minister of Natural
Resources, a copy of your correspondence of October 6, 2004, regarding
fossil fuels and support for nuclear power. Minister Efford has asked
me to respond on his behalf. I apologize for the delay in this response.
It was gratifying to read that you recognize the importance of nuclear
power as part of Canada's energy mix. There are limited options for
stable baseload electricity generation at competitive rates,
particularly in Ontario. Nuclear generation, which does not emit
greenhouse gas emisions or air pollutants, is an option that the
Government of Canada believes we must continue to support.
