NRCAN MINISTER EXPECTS LEPREAU REFURBISHING TO GO AHEAD
Natural Resources Canada Minister John Efford said he expects the $910
million planned refurbishing of the Point Lepreau nuclear reactor will
proceed. The Minister indicated he was a firm believer in nuclear power and
that included fixing up Atlantic Canada's only nuclear power reactor. He
noted that nuclear power does not create any air pollution or emit
greenhouse gases. Minister Efford noted that the final decision on Point
Lepreau rests with the provincial government of New Brunswick, but that he
was prepared to offer what assistance he could. He indicated that he has met
with provincial energy ministers across Canada to promote nuclear energy.

N.B. POWER SEEKING PRIVATE SECTOR INVESTMENT IN LEPREAU
New. Brunswick Power is interested in looking at proposals to invest in the
Point Lepreau nuclear reactor, according to N.B. Power Vice President Rod
White. Mr. White said that a new ownership structure for the reactor might
be the best chance for continued operation after rehabilitation. He
expressed confidence that the reactor could be refitted in a cost effective
and timely manner, but noted that time was drawing close to the intended
start of the rehabilitation program in 2008. He said it was possible that
plant operations could be extended to 2010, but such a delay would be highly
undesirable.
