Here's another strange argument (overheard on the subway and apparently advanced in all seriousness):
The sky-scrapers in Manhattan (most notoriously the Chrysler Building) provide nesting sites for birds: predatory birds: hawks, to be exact. These ravening monsters actually catch and EAT the poor pigeons... (And other birds, but the attention was mostly on the pigeons, of which NYC has an excess...) The person responsible for this cry of rage enjoys spending her time in Central Park... feeding the pigeons. She thinks that the management of the Chrysler Building, the police, or SOMEBODY ought to SHOOT those hawks and DO SOMETHING so that they won't be tempted to nest there any more.
I guess it takes all kinds.
