[cdn-nucl-l] Latest news from Ontario Power Generation---

Posted on OPG's email news list on July 16, 2003.

Of special note is the 2002 OPG Sustainable Development Progress Report
which places quite a bit of emphasis on the environmentally friendly nature
of their nuclear generation.

Also of note is the production figure for the 1.8 MWe V80 Vestas wind
turbine at Pickering. In 2002, the turbine produced 2,900 MWh, giving an
overall capacity factor of 2,900 MWh / (1.8 MW * 365 days * 24 hours/day) =
18.4%. This figure is hoped to improve in the coming years with increased
availability.

Note that a typical Canadian home consumes about 10,000 kWh/year, or 10
MWh/year, so the turbine produced enough power for about 290 average homes.

The same document indicates the new 9 MW Huron Wind wind farm (which uses 5
1.8 MW V80 turbines at a cost of $3 million each installed, with a 20 year
life expectancy) will produce enough power for 3,000 homes per year (30,000
MWh/year). Note, though, that 5 times the performance recorded in 2002 at
the Pickering turbine gives less than 1/2 that figure - lots of room for
improvement.
