[cdn-nucl-l] ITER and postings
Oh goodness gracious, Ed, come on. Stating that
ITER will use fusion like
the sun and other stars implies that atoms are
JOINED and not SPLIT in the
nuclear process involved, no more.
Oh, this was from the NYTimes??? I guess I missed
it. Yes, the TImes gets it wrong, but not quite
as wrong as the broadcast media, although
sometimes I wonder...
Of course, on the other hand, if the person(s) or
press release quoted came right out and said that
ITER was going to use D-T fusion, JUST LIKE A
"HYDROGEN" BOMB, there just might be a bit of
reluctance on the part of the public (and their
representatives in government) to fund the
I think a whole lot of education of the public is
required here. I was watching one of the Fred
Friendly seminars on PBS on Sunday - the subject
was - you guessed it - genetics and cloning...
One of the panelists, supposedly an educated
person, didn't realize that human "clones" already
exist, and in large numbers. We call them
identical twins... Once that was explained to
her, then ARTIFICIALLY creating clones became a
much more thinkable thought.
Ditto, I think, for fission power plants.
Greenpeace and Ralph Nader and others have hogged
the media for far too long.
However, by stating that ITER is going to operate
"just like the Sun, and other stars", we are
headed down the WRONG path, one that doesn't lead
to Enlightenment. Absolute honesty, and careful
explanation - repeated as often as necessary - is
the only way to get to a rational solution to our
On a different note: I, for one, would appreciate
it if, when responding to a particular thought in
a post, we could ALL truncate the post to which we
are responding to the minimum necessary to
indicate that which we have a problem with, or
with which we agree. This would be especially
appreciated on the longer posts...
