ONTARIO LIKELY TO IMPORT ELECTRICITY THIS WINTER

Electricity supplies are likely to be adequate this winter, according to the North American Electric Reliability Council (NERC) but Ontario may have to import large amounts of electricity to meet demand.

NERC has indicated that it assumes that more than 500 MW of new generation will enter service this winter, and that supply will be tight but adequate. Overall demand is expected to be 9.2 per cent higher this winter than last because of mild temperatures last year.

Other areas of concern in North America include the Southeastern Electric Reliability Council area and the Pacific Northwest. Nucleonics Week 11/28/02
