The construction of Fermi's pile took a couple of months and a bit of manual
labor to stack up the graphite bricks. It produced measurable power on the
first try based on knowledge gained from several simple experiments conducted
over a period of less than four years.
Less than 15 years after that pile operated, commercial plants producing
major quantities of power were operating with more under construction. Within
25 years after CP-1 operated, commercial plants that were competitive with 3
dollar per barrel oil were capturing major portions of the electric power
market in dozens of countries.
You say fusion, I say fission.
