JAPAN CHANGES TAXES TO ENCOURAGE NUCLEAR POWER

The Japanese Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry is reducing a special tax on electric utilities to promote more nuclear power electricity generation.  The resulting shortfall in tax revenues will be covered by a new tax on coal used for power generation as well as by raising taxes on natural gas and liquefied petroleum gas.  The tax rate on crude oil will remain unchanged.

The new tax is to take effect in 2003. Because the new tax on coal will be higher than the tax on nuclear power generation, the Ministry hopes that this will reduce carbon dioxide emissions. National Post/Nikkei 10/17/02
