Ontario's First Wind Farm Takes Shape
Kincardine, ON - July 11, 2002 - Construction of Ontario's first
commercial wind farm officially began today. Within five months, this
green power source should be supplying emission-free electricity for the
equivalent of 3,000 Ontario households.
Huron Wind, a 50:50 Limited Partnership between British Energy (Canada)
Ltd. and Ontario Power Generation (OPG) Inc., has commissioned Vestas,
the world's leading manufacturer of wind turbines, to construct and
install five 1.8-megawatt wind turbines on land adjacent to Bruce Power
Visitors' Centre near Tiverton. The two partners will jointly share the
wind farm's output.
Initial work on the site will involve the construction of roads for
equipment and the installation of foundations and underground electrical
cables. The components of the wind turbines are scheduled to arrive in
September for assembly over a three-month period.
"The complementary nature of nuclear power and wind energy in terms of
their emission-free technology makes this an ideal venture for us," said
Duncan Hawthorne, British Energy's Executive Director of North American
Operations. "Two years ago today we announced the private-public
partnership between OPG and British Energy for the Bruce nuclear
generating stations. Today we're breaking new ground again."
"OPG is already marketing green power products and customers are telling
us that wind is a valued part of our green energy supply mix," said
Graham L. Brown, General Manager of OPG Evergreen Energy, the business
unit charged with expanding OPG's green power portfolio. "Huron Wind
will help us meet that market demand."
British Energy (BE) is the UK's largest electricity generating company
and the majority partner in Bruce Power, the operator of the Bruce A and
Bruce B nuclear generating stations.
Ontario Power Generation is an Ontario based company, whose principal
business is the generation and sale of electricity to customers in
Ontario and to interconnected markets. OPG's goal is to be a premier
North American energy company, while operating in a safe, open, and
environmentally responsible manner. Our focus is on producing reliable
electricity from our competitive generation assets; power trading; and
commercial energy sales.
