[cdn-nucl-l] George R. Howey Award in Chemical Engineering
(Apologies to those receiving this twice...)
This message is for friends and colleagues of the late George Howey, who
would like to make a donation in his name to a worthy cause. The University
of British Columbia has set up, on behalf of George's wife Beatrice and
family, a new scholarship in George's honour, called the "George R. Howey
Award in Chemical Engineering", which will be presented annually to the top
third-year Chemical Engineering student at UBC. Donation details follow (if
the endowment is large enough the award will be presented in perpetuity).
George Howey passed away on May 2, 2001 in Deep River. He will be
remembered by many as the father of nuclear training in Canada, having set
up Ontario Hydro's CANDU Nuclear Training Centre at NPD in Rolphton in 1962
(following five years of participation in the plant's design and
commissioning). The Centre provided the basic training for all of Ontario
Hydro's nuclear operations, as well as other CANDU projects, until 1984.
Later, George was the driving force behind the Eastern and Western Nuclear
Training Centres at Pickering and Bruce, and was instrumental in developing
the full-scope real-time simulators for CANDU stations. He recruited many
of the people now in senior management positions at OPG and Bruce Power
nuclear facilities.
George was also a leader in establishing the Canadian Nuclear Society, and
served as its first President. He retired in 1982 but continued his
interest in nuclear training, and his strong support for the CNS. George is
a Fellow of the CNS (1992) and a recipient of the CNA Outstanding
Contribution Award.
Donations to the George R. Howey Award in Chemical Engineering can be made
by cash, credit card, cheque or money order (payable to "The University of
British Columbia" with the name of the award noted in the "memo" section)
