opportunities at Bruce Power
Everyone is TALKING about the problem. I bet
that when industry does really stand up and DO something about the problem,
they will throw some money at their internal training dept and at colleges and
universities expecting a solution in 12 months, ignoring the fact that
education cycle times for students are about 4 or 5 years once the processes
are put in place. And if they want a new process (ie hire more faculty,
implement a new program, etc), add about 2 years at the front end of the
process - longer perhaps given the approvals process. I feel like I am
staring into a fire hose ... nothing coming, nothing coming, nothing coming
... wham!
Plus, there has to be some assurance that the initiatives can
be sustained. Why should a prof take on the struggle when he or she is
already overwhelmed with teaching, research, supervision and committee
work? In short, there has to be the appropriate empowerment at all
levels (univ admin, profs, students, industry...). Empowerment means
desire, ability and the means.
I'm waiting. Nothing
coming, nothing coming...

I had a read of the transcript of

There
will be significant staffing needs and many opportunities for
young people to find interesting employment. Of course our educational
organizations (schools and universities) will have to get their act
together and inform students of the jobs that await them if they get a
suitable education. Then we need to provide this education. I think
there is an important role for the CNS in all of
this.
