[cdn-nucl-l] UNSCEAR 2000 Report, very important info on health effects of Chernobyl
I thought you ought to see Jaworowski's 3-page review (attached) of the
UNSCEAR 2000 report, which identifies quite clearly that there were no
excess cancers or birth defects among the Chernobyl liquidators or the
evacuated people.
Zbigniew even points out that the 1800 cases of thyroid cancer among the
children are likely occult cancers, which were only identified because of
the better thyroid examinations (screening) after the disaster. This is
still a controversial idea that I wouldn't play up, but Figure 1 is
interesting. In Canada, the incidence of occult thyroid cancer is 6000 per
100,000.
I think it's very important that the CNS and the CNA highlight this health
information for our members because it was hardly reported by the normal
media, and most people still believe the myths. Our members ought to be
aware of the real effects of radiation on health, not just the principles
and policies that the officials follow. The UNSCEAR reports have very high
credibility. Now is a good time to present this UNSCEAR information because
the 15th anniversary of the Chernobyl disaster is approaching.
